Legislation designed to educate drivers about the dangers of hazardous materials that vehicles are transporting on Illinois roadways has advanced in the state's legislative process. Senate Bill 3406, sponsored by Senator Steve McClure, has successfully passed the Senate and is now awaiting action in the Illinois House.

The bill, as Senator McClure explained, aims to increase awareness among drivers regarding hazardous materials being transported on the roads with them. McClure's bill mandates the incorporation of hazardous material placard education into the state's Rules of the Road publication, a significant resource utilized in driver's education classes.

The motivation behind Senate Bill 3406 stems from a tragic incident in 2023, as highlighted by the statement, "This bill comes in response to a deadly accident in 2023 involving a tanker carrying 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia that claimed five lives and injured 11." The aftermath of this event has underscored the critical need for enhanced education and awareness surrounding hazardous materials among drivers.

With the Senate's approval of Senate Bill 3406, Illinois moves closer to implementing measures that will equip drivers with the necessary knowledge to identify and respond appropriately to situations involving hazardous materials on the state's roadways.
